This Is Why You Shouldn't Support Zoos

To understand why visiting zoos goes totally against the core definition of veganism, first let's define what veganism really is. I'd also like to point out the difference between plant-based and vegan and why it's important to know that they're not the same. I understand that not supporting zoos while being vegan might seem like a very far, extra reach, but if you think about it, it's quite simple. I think it goes without saying that zoos are another way people us animals for entertainment.

Veganism seeks to exclude/reduce all forms of animal exploitation, while plant-based only refers to someone's food choices. Ethical vegans are not only against the farming, factory or not, of animals, wearing their skin, buying products that have been tested on animals, we're also against keeping animals in captivity. Zoos breed animals on purpose, just like the dairy industry. These animals aren't going to be released (back) into their natural environments and habitats. They're very often in wrong climates, away from their species environment. Zoos also experiment on animals, breeding, and other horrible things. Their cages are SO SMALL compared to the amount of land and space they normally need to live comfortably.

This all has an impact on these animals. They're sentient, conscious beings, capable of feeling and expressing emotions. Imagine a chicken in a small cage, kept there suffering for 3 months, not even having enough space to turn around. Now imagine a lion in the same space for 20 years, that's a zoo.

If you've ever been to a zoo, not necessarily paying close attention to the animal's behavior, they how clear signs of sadness, anxiety, distress. Wonder why? Put yourself in their situation. Imagine how many people developed mental health problems during the pandemic. Why? Because we were forced to stay inside, not knowing when it will end. Animals kept in captivity feel the same.

These animals often suffer the consequences of being held captive and everything else they go through in zoos. The animals often develop abnormal repetitive behaviors. Such as walking around in circles, leaving a clear path behind, rocking back and forth, pulling all of their hair out, pacing up and down, hitting themselves, and so much more. These are just a few examples. They all express how their experiences, being held captive for 20 years, makes them feel.

So what can you do to not support zoos and put an end to all of this unnecessary suffering? Don't go to zoos, support sanctuaries instead.
