I find gelatin one of the most disgusting ways humans exploit animals. When I first went vegan, I never really questioned why vegans don't eat gelatin. Finding out about all the horrible industries, I figured it was another scary and unjust industry. At the same time, I find educating myself and spreading awareness about all aspects of veganism important. It turns out the process of gelatin is no better than I thought.
Gelatin is made from pig skin, cow bones, and often fish. It is made from animal protein, skin, bones, ligaments, tendons. This process is more than just sad or horrifying. Skins and bones of cows and pigs are boiled, dried, and treated with chemicals. All this happens after a life of suffering those animals go through, after they have already been abused, exploited, after they had their throats cut or died in gas chambers.
All of this for what, candy? Five minutes of pleasure, while you eat some gummy bears or marshmallows just simply doesn't justify exploiting animals and using their body parts in such ways.
Where is it found? Vitamins, medicine that comes in a capsule, photographic film, marshmallows, candy, fruit gelatins, wines.
How can I avoid it? Read the ingredients list on the packaging of gummy bears, marshmallows, look for the vegan logo on candy, use barnivore.com to see whether wine and other alcohols are vegan.
